Time is Amanda's service dog. She detects Amanda's highs and lows due to her Type 1 Diabetes. Time joined our family June 23, 2008. Amanda was diagnosed in September 2003 at the age of six. This blog has also seen my oldest daughter diagnosed with Type 1 in December of 2010 and with Celiac in December 2011.

7 Weeks
We have had Time home for 7 weeks. This week we have really been concerned that she is not alerting us like she should. We are waiting on a call back from CARES to help answer some questions. She only alerts us sporatically. And, sometimes, we think it is an alert and Amanda will be fine. Asta, our 10 yr old part pomeranian, sleeps with Tony and I and growls every time she hears Time during the night. That is definiately part of the problem. Time must know we are talking about her because last night Amanda and I were playing Pictionary in the floor and she started licking me all over. I checked Amanda and her blood sugar was 316. So I praised her and gave her a treat. During the night, Tony had fallen asleep on the couch and Time came in the den and started licking Tony. Tony asked if Amanda was OK and Time went back to Amanda's room and laid down. Her blood sugar was 370. So, he praise her and gave her a treat and she went back to bed. This morning she came out of Amanda's room and didn't seem anxious or wanting to lick anyone, so I checked on Amanda and her blood sugar was very good, 130. We may put Asta in bed with one of the other kids and see if that will allow Time the freedom to come in our room at night.

Hello! I really hope that things work out for Time and Amanda! They are so beautiful together! Skylar has only had Denali for two weeks and she is not Alerting to anything yet. Sometimes when she hears me check her sugars at night she perks up to see if she is going to get a treat....lol I know that its going to take time, but its flustering. I am sure that it's really flustering for you guys after 7 weeks. I really hope that Sarah and them have some ideas on how to make it better. What are yall's markers for her highs and lows? We are doing above 200 and below 80. I have often wondered if our markers are two close together and if we needed to spread them out a bit. Skylar has not had a lot of low's to treat Denali for, but a few highs. Her blood sugars have been the best they have been in FOREVER this past week so we have not been able to treat Denali to much. I told her that it figures her sugars would even out once we needed to train the dog....lol Normally we are in LOWS and HIGHS most of the time and the rare normals are few and far between until we got the dog..lol I know it must be a lot harder for Amanda being that she has had Time for so long. Skylar is already worried about Denali not doing what she was ment to do and that she will have to re train with another dog. That would break her heart! I told her that we have not had Denali long enough to worry about that which makes her feel a little better I think. I think she was expecting her to alert as fast as Garbo did and it didn't happen. I am sure all our Guardian Angel's will work out and all we have to do is wait and watch. Please let me know what Sarah says that may help. I am sure with all us working together our dogs will be all we have hoped for! I love reading your blogs and check them weekly so please keep sharing your progress!
Amanda, Skylar and Denali
